Welcome to the South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development website – an information source for residents, business owners and visitors to our neighborhoods.

SAND is an umbrella organization that serves residents and businesses of five City of Atlanta designated neighborhoods. These neighborhoods were created by the City of Atlanta in the 1970’s and are: Benteen Park, Boulevard Heights, McDonough-Guice, North Ormewood Park, Ormewood Park and Woodland Hills.

South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development is an all-volunteer, non-profit corporation that was formed in 1979 to serve the needs of the resident and businesses of five City of Atlanta neighborhoods. Some of the residents who founded the organization still live in the neighborhoods. SAND has attained the federal 501(c)3 status of a non-profit corporation, and as such, can accept donations from anyone who wishes to make a financial contribution to the organization, and those donations are tax deductible.

The role and function of SAND is to offer all residents and business owners the opportunity to participate in efforts to improve the quality of life within our neighborhoods. SAND does this by providing a monthly forum for discussion and debate of issues that affect our communities, by encouraging committee participation and collaboration to formulate solutions to problems, and by promoting community pride and a sense of neighborhood.

Any resident or business owner 18 years or older whose primary place of residence, or place of business, is within the boundaries of one of the five neighborhoods may participate at SAND monthly meetings and on SAND committees. Committee reports are provided at monthly meetings and there is usually a land use rezoning or variance request to be voted on, along with the occasional application for a license to sell or serve alcohol from a local business. The monthly meeting is a great way to find out about changes that are happening in the neighborhoods, and how these changes might affect you and your neighborhood.

Voting rules: to be eligible to vote at a SAND meeting, in addition to being a resident or business owner from one of the six neighborhoods, you must have attended two meetings within the previous 12 months.
